WEBVTT

1
00:00:12.675 --> 00:00:14.585
Hello, welcome back to session two.

2
00:00:14.955 --> 00:00:17.385
Today you are going to start using our resources.

3
00:00:17.725 --> 00:00:21.305
So get ready for creative, fun storytelling

4
00:00:21.445 --> 00:00:23.305
and just wait to be astounded

5
00:00:23.305 --> 00:00:25.185
by the difference you'll see in your children.

6
00:00:25.695 --> 00:00:28.745
Last session we talked about how important it is

7
00:00:29.045 --> 00:00:31.265
to develop quality interactions with children.

8
00:00:31.405 --> 00:00:34.985
In early years Tale's Toolkit has quality interactions at

9
00:00:34.985 --> 00:00:36.825
the core of everything we develop.

10
00:00:37.045 --> 00:00:40.905
So throughout today's training, keep in mind those top tips.

11
00:00:41.885 --> 00:00:44.425
Let the child lead tune in.

12
00:00:44.855 --> 00:00:48.265
Careful use of language, careful use of questioning.

13
00:00:48.525 --> 00:00:52.345
By the end of today's training, I want you to understand how

14
00:00:52.345 --> 00:00:56.225
to tell a simple story and how tell toolkit develop skills.

15
00:00:57.095 --> 00:00:59.825
Part one, how to tell a simple story.

16
00:01:00.315 --> 00:01:03.665
Today we're going to be showing you the first of the Tales,

17
00:01:03.665 --> 00:01:06.545
toolkit, resources, and there's lots more to come.

18
00:01:06.965 --> 00:01:10.785
But using our Tales toolkit, big kit is the first step

19
00:01:10.805 --> 00:01:13.305
to set children up as creative storytellers.

20
00:01:13.645 --> 00:01:17.785
The big kit comes with four large bags with Velcro seals,

21
00:01:18.085 --> 00:01:20.625
so they're safe for even the youngest children to use.

22
00:01:21.125 --> 00:01:23.745
And these come with an outer bag so

23
00:01:23.745 --> 00:01:25.825
that you can hang the whole lot up in the cupboard.

24
00:01:26.005 --> 00:01:28.185
So your special bits don't go walkabout.

25
00:01:28.565 --> 00:01:31.265
The four Velcro bags are labeled with the symbols.

26
00:01:31.735 --> 00:01:35.945
Character setting problem. Solution.

27
00:01:36.395 --> 00:01:37.865
These symbols are key.

28
00:01:38.135 --> 00:01:41.185
They're on all of our resources and are really clear.

29
00:01:41.325 --> 00:01:44.385
So very young children, those little language

30
00:01:44.725 --> 00:01:47.505
and not yet reading are able to recognize them.

31
00:01:47.985 --> 00:01:50.825
Children are encouraged to pull different items from the

32
00:01:50.825 --> 00:01:53.625
bags, and together you create stories

33
00:01:54.045 --> 00:01:56.345
and bring them to life as in action.

34
00:01:56.725 --> 00:01:59.305
Voices and sounds. Tales talk.

35
00:01:59.445 --> 00:02:03.545
Its symbols shown while saying the words character setting.

36
00:02:03.975 --> 00:02:06.785
Problem. Solution are quickly learn

37
00:02:06.805 --> 00:02:08.705
by children working at different levels.

38
00:02:09.295 --> 00:02:11.945
This repetition of words, symbols,

39
00:02:12.125 --> 00:02:15.665
and story strengthen those neural pathways in the brain

40
00:02:15.765 --> 00:02:18.505
and they become really easy to remember pegs

41
00:02:18.505 --> 00:02:20.505
for the children to hang stories on. So

42
00:02:20.505 --> 00:02:23.865
What Tales Toolkit offers is a framework

43
00:02:24.405 --> 00:02:28.905
for supporting children's first steps in making up stories,

44
00:02:29.985 --> 00:02:34.305
imaginative play, putting ideas together and into sequences.

45
00:02:34.765 --> 00:02:37.585
And that sort of framework can be hugely

46
00:02:37.585 --> 00:02:38.705
helpful to children.

47
00:02:39.055 --> 00:02:41.985
This is a powerful tool, giving the children freedom

48
00:02:42.205 --> 00:02:44.265
to create stories with familiar items.

49
00:02:44.815 --> 00:02:46.545
Introduce the bags to the children.

50
00:02:47.085 --> 00:02:50.065
So today we are not gonna tell a story using a book.

51
00:02:50.455 --> 00:02:53.345
What we gonna use? Storytelling.

52
00:02:53.565 --> 00:02:55.625
We are gonna do storytelling with their bags,

53
00:02:55.775 --> 00:02:56.785
with our tells toolkit.

54
00:02:56.935 --> 00:02:59.285
Bags, don't worry too much about the children.

55
00:02:59.765 --> 00:03:00.965
Remembering the names of the bags.

56
00:03:01.345 --> 00:03:03.165
The symbols and the story structure.

57
00:03:03.395 --> 00:03:04.845
This will develop over time.

58
00:03:05.105 --> 00:03:07.725
As the children become familiar with how the bags are used,

59
00:03:07.755 --> 00:03:10.805
encourage the children to say the names of the bags with you

60
00:03:11.145 --> 00:03:12.805
and they'll quickly pick this up.

61
00:03:12.805 --> 00:03:13.885
Should we do it together?

62
00:03:14.955 --> 00:03:17.565
Character setting,

63
00:03:18.555 --> 00:03:20.845
problem solution.

64
00:03:21.295 --> 00:03:23.485
Start with the character bag. Character.

65
00:03:23.745 --> 00:03:26.165
Is this our character bag? Yeah. Yeah.

66
00:03:26.585 --> 00:03:27.685
Choose one of the children

67
00:03:27.865 --> 00:03:29.365
to pull a character from the bag.

68
00:03:29.865 --> 00:03:32.325
And at the start, you take control of the props,

69
00:03:32.495 --> 00:03:35.165
especially in larger groups as its key.

70
00:03:35.425 --> 00:03:38.445
You bring the stories to life, make the character talk,

71
00:03:39.115 --> 00:03:40.245
move dance.

72
00:03:41.005 --> 00:03:43.245
Modeling this before the children have a go.

73
00:03:43.245 --> 00:03:45.765
Encourage the children to tell you about the character.

74
00:03:46.445 --> 00:03:49.565
Remember though, careful use of questioning. Hmm.

75
00:03:49.645 --> 00:03:52.365
I wonder who this is. I'd like to know their name.

76
00:03:52.745 --> 00:03:55.165
You might want to use story language here.

77
00:03:55.675 --> 00:03:56.765
Keep stories simple.

78
00:03:57.195 --> 00:03:58.445
Just chat about one

79
00:03:58.585 --> 00:04:00.965
or two things that the character likes to do.

80
00:04:01.315 --> 00:04:02.925
Next, introduce the setting.

81
00:04:03.215 --> 00:04:05.405
Shall we look in the setting bag to see

82
00:04:05.405 --> 00:04:08.205
where our character is going today? Adam said,

83
00:04:08.205 --> 00:04:08.565
It's a very,

84
00:04:21.075 --> 00:04:22.285
it's pepper pig.

85
00:04:24.655 --> 00:04:27.205
Using tell's toolkit, you'll see an improvement in the

86
00:04:27.325 --> 00:04:28.365
children's language development.

87
00:04:28.915 --> 00:04:33.745
This was the first story from a nursery boy is the Dragon,

88
00:04:34.855 --> 00:04:37.635
and after just a few weeks of using Tell's toolkit,

89
00:04:37.945 --> 00:04:41.755
this was the story that he told once upon a time,

90
00:04:41.805 --> 00:04:45.075
their crocodile in a sparkly house.

91
00:04:46.005 --> 00:04:49.025
The problem was bear the bear sad.

92
00:04:49.425 --> 00:04:53.585
Crocodile the bear. Share glasses and share friends.

93
00:05:03.285 --> 00:05:05.905
The storytelling you provide now is setting your children

94
00:05:06.005 --> 00:05:07.025
up to be curious.

95
00:05:07.985 --> 00:05:10.345
Creative adults with good communication skills

96
00:05:11.045 --> 00:05:12.425
and the best bit,

97
00:05:12.775 --> 00:05:14.385
because it's led by the children,

98
00:05:14.695 --> 00:05:16.225
there's virtually no planning.

99
00:05:16.605 --> 00:05:18.505
You just pick up the bags and go,

100
00:05:18.925 --> 00:05:21.745
and who knows where your stories will lead.

Nursery Group Story

Kate leads a group story with this nursery setting. As well as modelling for the children, Kate is also incorporating a variety of creative approaches. Using songs, actions and phonic sounds.

Under 3s Group Story

This group story with the littlest of people shows how they quickly grasp the story structure. This practitioner takes her time embedding the use of the symbols while keeping the children really engaged with voices, songs and actions.

Watch without activities

This video has the same content as the core training video but we've removed the timed activity sections for speedier viewing. This is designed to help practitioners refresh their knowledge.

If you are doing the training for the first time, we recommend watching the full length video together with your team. Team learning means you'll get the most out of the training experience - and it's more fun!

Session 2 Sneak Peek: Big Kits

Now you've got the background in the importance of quality interactions we learnt about in Session 1, it's time to really get stuck into storytelling! Grab the Big Bags and start telling stories with the children as a group. In this session, we'll talk through the symbols, how to model stories and bring in ideas for the children to lead from.

WEBVTT

1
00:00:12.675 --> 00:00:14.585
Hello, welcome back to session two.

2
00:00:14.955 --> 00:00:17.385
Today you are going to start using our resources.

3
00:00:17.725 --> 00:00:21.305
So get ready for creative, fun storytelling

4
00:00:21.445 --> 00:00:23.305
and just wait to be astounded

5
00:00:23.305 --> 00:00:25.185
by the difference you'll see in your children.

6
00:00:25.695 --> 00:00:28.745
Last session we talked about how important it is

7
00:00:29.045 --> 00:00:31.265
to develop quality interactions with children.

8
00:00:31.405 --> 00:00:34.985
In early years Tale's Toolkit has quality interactions at

9
00:00:34.985 --> 00:00:36.825
the core of everything we develop.

10
00:00:37.045 --> 00:00:40.905
So throughout today's training, keep in mind those top tips.

11
00:00:41.885 --> 00:00:44.425
Let the child lead tune in.

12
00:00:44.855 --> 00:00:48.265
Careful use of language, careful use of questioning.

13
00:00:48.525 --> 00:00:52.345
By the end of today's training, I want you to understand how

14
00:00:52.345 --> 00:00:56.225
to tell a simple story and how tell toolkit develop skills.

15
00:00:57.095 --> 00:00:59.825
Part one, how to tell a simple story.

16
00:01:00.315 --> 00:01:03.665
Today we're going to be showing you the first of the Tales,

17
00:01:03.665 --> 00:01:06.545
toolkit, resources, and there's lots more to come.

18
00:01:06.965 --> 00:01:10.785
But using our Tales toolkit, big kit is the first step

19
00:01:10.805 --> 00:01:13.305
to set children up as creative storytellers.

20
00:01:13.645 --> 00:01:17.785
The big kit comes with four large bags with Velcro seals,

21
00:01:18.085 --> 00:01:20.625
so they're safe for even the youngest children to use.

22
00:01:21.125 --> 00:01:23.745
And these come with an outer bag so

23
00:01:23.745 --> 00:01:25.825
that you can hang the whole lot up in the cupboard.

24
00:01:26.005 --> 00:01:28.185
So your special bits don't go walkabout.

25
00:01:28.565 --> 00:01:31.265
The four Velcro bags are labeled with the symbols.

26
00:01:31.735 --> 00:01:35.945
Character setting problem. Solution.

27
00:01:36.395 --> 00:01:37.865
These symbols are key.

28
00:01:38.135 --> 00:01:41.185
They're on all of our resources and are really clear.

29
00:01:41.325 --> 00:01:44.385
So very young children, those little language

30
00:01:44.725 --> 00:01:47.505
and not yet reading are able to recognize them.

31
00:01:47.985 --> 00:01:50.825
Children are encouraged to pull different items from the

32
00:01:50.825 --> 00:01:53.625
bags, and together you create stories

33
00:01:54.045 --> 00:01:56.345
and bring them to life as in action.

34
00:01:56.725 --> 00:01:59.305
Voices and sounds. Tales talk.

35
00:01:59.445 --> 00:02:03.545
Its symbols shown while saying the words character setting.

36
00:02:03.975 --> 00:02:06.785
Problem. Solution are quickly learn

37
00:02:06.805 --> 00:02:08.705
by children working at different levels.

38
00:02:09.295 --> 00:02:11.945
This repetition of words, symbols,

39
00:02:12.125 --> 00:02:15.665
and story strengthen those neural pathways in the brain

40
00:02:15.765 --> 00:02:18.505
and they become really easy to remember pegs

41
00:02:18.505 --> 00:02:20.505
for the children to hang stories on. So

42
00:02:20.505 --> 00:02:23.865
What Tales Toolkit offers is a framework

43
00:02:24.405 --> 00:02:28.905
for supporting children's first steps in making up stories,

44
00:02:29.985 --> 00:02:34.305
imaginative play, putting ideas together and into sequences.

45
00:02:34.765 --> 00:02:37.585
And that sort of framework can be hugely

46
00:02:37.585 --> 00:02:38.705
helpful to children.

47
00:02:39.055 --> 00:02:41.985
This is a powerful tool, giving the children freedom

48
00:02:42.205 --> 00:02:44.265
to create stories with familiar items.

49
00:02:44.815 --> 00:02:46.545
Introduce the bags to the children.

50
00:02:47.085 --> 00:02:50.065
So today we are not gonna tell a story using a book.

51
00:02:50.455 --> 00:02:53.345
What we gonna use? Storytelling.

52
00:02:53.565 --> 00:02:55.625
We are gonna do storytelling with their bags,

53
00:02:55.775 --> 00:02:56.785
with our tells toolkit.

54
00:02:56.935 --> 00:02:59.285
Bags, don't worry too much about the children.

55
00:02:59.765 --> 00:03:00.965
Remembering the names of the bags.

56
00:03:01.345 --> 00:03:03.165
The symbols and the story structure.

57
00:03:03.395 --> 00:03:04.845
This will develop over time.

58
00:03:05.105 --> 00:03:07.725
As the children become familiar with how the bags are used,

59
00:03:07.755 --> 00:03:10.805
encourage the children to say the names of the bags with you

60
00:03:11.145 --> 00:03:12.805
and they'll quickly pick this up.

61
00:03:12.805 --> 00:03:13.885
Should we do it together?

62
00:03:14.955 --> 00:03:17.565
Character setting,

63
00:03:18.555 --> 00:03:20.845
problem solution.

64
00:03:21.295 --> 00:03:23.485
Start with the character bag. Character.

65
00:03:23.745 --> 00:03:26.165
Is this our character bag? Yeah. Yeah.

66
00:03:26.585 --> 00:03:27.685
Choose one of the children

67
00:03:27.865 --> 00:03:29.365
to pull a character from the bag.

68
00:03:29.865 --> 00:03:32.325
And at the start, you take control of the props,

69
00:03:32.495 --> 00:03:35.165
especially in larger groups as its key.

70
00:03:35.425 --> 00:03:38.445
You bring the stories to life, make the character talk,

71
00:03:39.115 --> 00:03:40.245
move dance.

72
00:03:41.005 --> 00:03:43.245
Modeling this before the children have a go.

73
00:03:43.245 --> 00:03:45.765
Encourage the children to tell you about the character.

74
00:03:46.445 --> 00:03:49.565
Remember though, careful use of questioning. Hmm.

75
00:03:49.645 --> 00:03:52.365
I wonder who this is. I'd like to know their name.

76
00:03:52.745 --> 00:03:55.165
You might want to use story language here.

77
00:03:55.675 --> 00:03:56.765
Keep stories simple.

78
00:03:57.195 --> 00:03:58.445
Just chat about one

79
00:03:58.585 --> 00:04:00.965
or two things that the character likes to do.

80
00:04:01.315 --> 00:04:02.925
Next, introduce the setting.

81
00:04:03.215 --> 00:04:05.405
Shall we look in the setting bag to see

82
00:04:05.405 --> 00:04:08.205
where our character is going today? Adam said,

83
00:04:08.205 --> 00:04:08.565
It's a very,

84
00:04:21.075 --> 00:04:22.285
it's pepper pig.

85
00:04:24.655 --> 00:04:27.205
Using tell's toolkit, you'll see an improvement in the

86
00:04:27.325 --> 00:04:28.365
children's language development.

87
00:04:28.915 --> 00:04:33.745
This was the first story from a nursery boy is the Dragon,

88
00:04:34.855 --> 00:04:37.635
and after just a few weeks of using Tell's toolkit,

89
00:04:37.945 --> 00:04:41.755
this was the story that he told once upon a time,

90
00:04:41.805 --> 00:04:45.075
their crocodile in a sparkly house.

91
00:04:46.005 --> 00:04:49.025
The problem was bear the bear sad.

92
00:04:49.425 --> 00:04:53.585
Crocodile the bear. Share glasses and share friends.

93
00:05:03.285 --> 00:05:05.905
The storytelling you provide now is setting your children

94
00:05:06.005 --> 00:05:07.025
up to be curious.

95
00:05:07.985 --> 00:05:10.345
Creative adults with good communication skills

96
00:05:11.045 --> 00:05:12.425
and the best bit,

97
00:05:12.775 --> 00:05:14.385
because it's led by the children,

98
00:05:14.695 --> 00:05:16.225
there's virtually no planning.

99
00:05:16.605 --> 00:05:18.505
You just pick up the bags and go,

100
00:05:18.925 --> 00:05:21.745
and who knows where your stories will lead.
